Amber hills and woodsmoke
Autumn in Umbria, the Festa del Bosco and a warm sustainable stay at Casale San Cristoforo
If you have never experienced Umbria in autumn, you are missing the best of it.
The hills soften into amber and rust. The air carries the scent of woodsmoke, damp earth and truffle. The light — that particular golden Umbrian light — falls lower and longer across the landscape, making everything look like a painting you want to live inside.
This is the season we love most at Casale San Cristoforo.
Nestled in the unspoiled countryside near Montone, one of Italy's most beautiful medieval villages, our organic agriturismo feels especially alive in autumn. The harvest is in. The olives are ready. The garden is at its most honest, stripped back and quietly beautiful. Guests who arrive in October or November often tell us they never want to leave — and we understand exactly why.
The Festa del Bosco — a reason to visit in itself
Every year at the end of October, the medieval village of Montone transforms into something truly extraordinary. The Festa del Bosco — now in its 41st edition — is one of Umbria's most beloved autumn celebrations, filling the ancient lanes and piazzas with the flavours and crafts of the forest. Chestnuts roasting, fresh truffles, wild mushrooms and local honey sit alongside handmade ceramics, wrought iron work and intricate embroidery passed down through generations. Guided walks through the surrounding woods, tastings, art exhibitions — and for the brave, a tightrope walker crossing between the village bell towers. It is unlike anything else.
Staying at Casale San Cristoforo means you are minutes from all of it — and able to return home to the peace of the countryside at the end of each day.
Warm, sustainable comfort — whatever the weather
Autumn evenings in Umbria can be crisp, and we think that is part of the pleasure. At Casale San Cristoforo, you will find the kind of warmth that wraps around you the moment you walk through the door. Our property runs entirely on clean energy — solar panels installed across both the agriturismo and main house, paired with heat pumps and underfloor heating throughout, make us fully independent from the electricity grid. You can sink into a warm, comfortable stay knowing that not a single degree of that warmth costs the earth.
It is, we think, exactly what a sustainable agriturismo in Umbria should feel like.
Come in autumn. Stay a little longer.
Autumn at Casale San Cristoforo is not a compromise. It is, for many of our guests, the very best time to visit. Fewer crowds, richer colours, deeper flavours — and a quietness that feels like it belongs entirely to you.
We have limited availability for October and November. We would love to welcome you.
