From City Life to a Life in the Land-
How Umbria Stole Our Hearts Forever
It all began fifteen years ago with a last-minute trip to Italy and one wonderfully romantic dinner at Locanda del Capitano in Montone.
We were instantly, completely and irrevocably in love.
To this day, we are still amazed by everything around us. The warmth of the people, the depth of the culture, the extraordinary food, the timeless hilltop towns. There is a beauty in the way life is lived here, and we still pinch ourselves that we get to call this place home.
Finding Our Way Home
It took us many cities and countries to finally arrive here. London, New York, and countless adventures in between.
But when we found this corner of Umbria, something felt different. We wanted to raise our two daughters closer to nature, to slow down, and to build a life with more space, more time together and a deeper connection to the world around us.
Today, our television has been replaced by the world outside our door — the changing seasons, the birdsong in the valley, the animals, the olive trees and every sunset that reminds us to stop and look.
In early 2024, we took over Casale San Cristoforo and its 14 hectares of Umbrian countryside.
We didn't arrive with a finished plan. We arrived with a vision.
Becoming Part of the Land
Casale San Cristoforo is more than a beautiful place to stay. It is a working farm, and we are slowly learning what it means to care for a piece of land of our own.
The farm is officially in conversion to certified organic farming, and this commitment guides the way we work.
Around 400 olive trees give us our own 100% Umbrian extra virgin olive oil. We have a seasonal vegetable garden, 30 fruit trees for fresh produce and homemade jams, and we have begun growing our own ancient wheat varieties and legumes.
We farm with purpose, using permaculture and regenerative agriculture practices to improve soil health, encourage biodiversity and work with nature rather than against it.
Chickens roam freely through the land and wild plants and native herbs grow among the cultivated fields.
We are still learning. And perhaps that is one of the things we love most about farming.
There is always another season. Another harvest. Another thing to discover.
A Different Kind of Hospitality
When we opened Casale San Cristoforo to guests, we didn't want to create a hotel.
We wanted to share our home, our farm and our way of life.
There are no grand gestures here. Just thoughtful details, beautiful surroundings, good food and the feeling of having somewhere to slow down.
We speak English, Hungarian, Italian and German, and we welcome people from all over the world.
During your stay, you are not simply a guest — you are our neighbour for a little while.
We are happy to share our favourite restaurants, hidden places, walks, villages and seasonal discoveries. The things that have made us fall in love with Umbria, and that continue to make us feel incredibly lucky to live here.
